Jimmy Savile, the top radio disc jockey of the day, spoke with Decca on Tom Jones' behalf. Shortly after, Peter Sullivan, a recording manager for Decca, visited Tom in Wales and promised to get him a recording contract. "It's Not Unusual" shot to number 1 on St David's Day. Gord0n Mills' experience and contacts with The Viscounts opened doors for 1965 appearances on "Top Of The Pops", "Ready Steady Go!", the "Billy Cotton Show" and "Juke Box Jury" to promote "It's Not Unusual". Toting a bow in his hair, similar to P.J. Proby, Tom Jones replaced the American artist in February 1965 for the Cilla Black/Tomme Roe package tour. In April, Tom Jones was appearing at the 'NME' Pollwinners Concert and top billing on "Sunday Night At The Palladium".
